Why this page exists

Search “reddit marketing tools” and the top results all look the same: a numbered list of platforms, a feature matrix, a pricing table, and a recommendation that depends on whether you want managed accounts or DIY discovery. That is useful for vendor selection. It is useless for the question that decides whether any of those tools earn their cost: which tactic is actually worth the upvotes, and which one quietly burns the account?

S4L has been operating a Reddit pipeline long enough to have a 2,732-comment corpus stored in posts.db, with upvote counts, subreddit, engagement style, reply target, and posting timestamp on every row. On 2026-04-13 the team ran an internal analysis to figure out what actually predicts upvotes. This page is that scorecard, edited only for clarity. Every number is checkable against the file at /Users/matthewdi/social-autoposter/scripts/reddit-analysis.md.

The single biggest opportunity in the data

Across 2,732 comments, replying to the original poster averaged 10.82 upvotes. Replying to a commenter averaged 2.59. That is a 4.2x lift from one targeting decision. And yet only 4.4% of S4L's own comments did it. Most reddit marketing tools surface threads with active engagement and let you reply to whoever has the most visible comment. The data says that is wrong: when you have something to add, address the OP directly.

The eight rules every reddit marketing tool should enforce

These are the eight changes the analysis surfaced as priority-zero. Each one is backed by a sample of at least 100 comments. None of them require a model upgrade.

Rules backed by 2,732-comment data

  • Cap daily volume at 30-50 comments. S4L sat at 137/day; Reddit treats 10-20/day as the upper bound for a normal account.
  • Enforce a 3-5 minute minimum between any two comments. 55% of S4L's comments hit sub-minute gaps and that's the loudest spam signal.
  • Cap same-subreddit posting at 2 per day. r/ClaudeCode at 6/day and r/webdev at 5/day attract mod attention.
  • Open in first person when the thread allows it. 4.18 avg upvotes vs 3.04 baseline, but only 2.8% of measured comments did it.
  • Reply to OP when there is something genuine to add. 10.82 vs 2.59, currently 4.4% of comments.
  • Be the first comment in a sub for the day. 3.87 avg vs 1.98 for second-third position.
  • Never include a URL in a comment. 1.38 avg with a link, 3.02 without.
  • Never mention your own product by name. 1.17 avg, hard ceiling at 10 upvotes.

Subreddit fit, broken out

Where you post matters as much as how you post. The data sorts subreddits into four groups: where S4L wins, where it loses, where it is at risk of mod attention from sheer volume, and where the engagement style itself is what swings the average.

r/selfimprovement (130.20 avg over 5 comments), r/doordash (74.67 over 3), r/cscareerquestions (23.20 over 5), r/ExperiencedDevs (8.76 over 42), r/Mindfulness (11.36 over 14). High-context subs that reward substantive contributions and tolerate longer thoughtful comments.

Subreddits where S4L loses

r/node (-4.00 avg), r/smallbusiness (-0.15), r/SoftwareEngineering (0.00), r/reactjs (0.64), r/socialmedia (0.75). Hostile to outsider takes, technical correctness police, or saturated with low-effort marketing already.

Subreddits at risk of mod attention

r/ClaudeCode (320 all-time, 42 last 7 days, 2.92 avg) and r/AI_Agents (298 all-time, 28 last 7 days, 1.77 avg). Volume is high enough that mod tooling will profile the account if posting velocity does not slow down.

Engagement style with the highest avg

'contrarian' style: 7.00 avg over 5 comments, max 30. 'curious_probe' style: -0.11 avg over 19 comments. The data forced a removal of curious_probe from the Reddit style pool entirely.

How the data feeds the next run

posts.db is not just a logging table. The same averages that drive this scorecard are read on every run by engagement_styles.py to decide which voice to draft in. Styles with too few samples (MIN_SAMPLE_SIZE = 5) get exiled to an explore bucket. Styles with negative averages drop out entirely. This is the loop the SERP listicles do not show.

A real invocation. The pipeline picks the dominant-tier style off the live posts table, enforces the posting gap, drops drafts that violate the product-mention or link rules, and respects the per-sub day cap. Each line corresponds to a logged decision you can grep for.

The category split out after GummySearch closed in November 2025. Pure monitoring tools (Brand24, F5Bot) are read-only. Discovery tools (SubredditSignals, ReddiReach) surface threads but leave engagement to you. Agentic platforms (ReplyAgent, S4L) operate accounts. Each category interacts with the scorecard differently.

Where do these numbers actually come from?

Every figure on this page is from /Users/matthewdi/social-autoposter/scripts/reddit-analysis.md, generated by querying posts.db on 2026-04-13. posts.db is the SQLite store that S4L writes to every time a comment ships. It tracks 2,732 comments across one main account (Deep_Ad1959) plus minor activity on two others. The same SQL that produces the numbers is in the file, so anyone with a similar pipeline can run it and compare.

Why is replying to OP worth 4.2x the upvotes of replying to commenters?

Two compounding reasons. First, OP replies usually surface near the top of the thread because Reddit's default sort weights early high-engagement comments. Second, OP replies have a clearer audience: you are responding to the person who shaped the conversation, so other readers treat the comment as part of the main exchange rather than a side branch. Across 2,732 measured comments, replies to OP averaged 10.82 upvotes (n=121, max 639) versus 2.59 for replies to commenters (n=2,611, max 220). Despite that gap, only 4.4% of S4L's comments were OP replies, which the analysis flagged as the single biggest structural opportunity.

What is the correct posting interval and why?

Three to five minutes between comments, minimum. The data shows sub-minute gaps averaged 2.6 upvotes across 384 comments while 1-5 minute gaps averaged 7.0 across 175 comments. That is a 2.7x lift just from slowing down. Sub-minute intervals are also the single most reliable signal Reddit uses to flag scripted accounts, because no human reads a thread, drafts a substantive comment, and posts in under 60 seconds. S4L's pipeline is being moved off its previous 137 comments per day toward 30-50 per day with a per-sub cap of 2 per day.

Why do product mentions and links cap performance so hard?

A product mention turned the average upvotes from 3.05 (no mention, n=2,593) to 1.17 (mention, n=139), and the maximum from 639 to 10. A URL pulled the average from 3.02 (no link, n=2,629) to 1.38 (with link, n=103). Reddit users have a calibrated nose for promotion, and most subs auto-suppress comments that look promotional via reputation systems, AutoMod rules, or moderator review. Any reddit marketing tool that drops links or product names into comments is buying a hard upvote ceiling that no model upgrade will lift.

The losers (negative or near-zero avg with at least 3 comments) are r/node (-4.00), r/smallbusiness (-0.15), r/SoftwareEngineering (0.00), r/reactjs (0.64), and r/socialmedia (0.75).
