The reddit marketing loop
Stage 1 — Scope the ICP to named subreddits
Agencies do this in a Notion doc. S4L stores it in config.json under each project's subreddits list, joined into a multi-sub search URL at query time.
The suffix self:yes nsfw:no is hardcoded onto every query in reddit_tools.py. Self-posts engage 4x better than link posts in the measured dataset, and the NSFW filter keeps accounts away from flagged content.
Stage 2 — Discover threads with double-validated lock detection
The JSON API tells you locked=false; the HTML still renders .locked-tagline on r/Entrepreneur AutoMod lockouts. S4L checks both before the drafter sees the thread.
Also drops anything older than 4,320 hours (180 days). Most agency operators never think about this because they only see fresh threads in their manual feed. Bots see everything, including 2-year-old search hits where the sub went private.
Stage 3 — Preflight the rate-limit quota
Before spending Anthropic tokens on drafting, one cheap GET to /r/popular.json reads the X-Ratelimit headers. If the remaining budget plus the inline wait budget cannot cover a post, the run aborts.
The reset is persisted to /tmp/reddit_ratelimit.json. Next invocation starts by reading that file rather than making a blind request. An agency operator has no equivalent persistent state; they just find out their account is throttled mid-reply.
Stage 4 — Draft with a single-reply Claude session
One reply, one session, no batching. The prompt shows the last 3 archetypes used so Claude does not repeat itself, and the live upvote-ranked style list so it picks a dominant style 60% of the time.
Session isolation is the expensive choice (more API calls than batching), made deliberately. A batched session accumulates context from prior drafts and homogenizes tone across a day of comments; an isolated one reads fresh every time.
Stage 5 — Post via CDP, capture the error surface
Reddit's anti-bot layer is fingerprint-sensitive; raw API POSTs get throttled. S4L drives old.reddit.com in a Chromium DevTools Protocol session that reuses saved cookies.
Every failure has a named error code: thread_locked, thread_archived, not_logged_in, subreddit_restricted. These codes are the input to stage 6.
Stage 6 — Feed the failure back into the blocklist
On subreddit_restricted, the same run that failed opens config.json, appends the sub to subreddit_bans.comment_blocked, sorts, and rewrites the file. Every future search across every project drops that sub.
This is the part almost no agency describes on their homepage. Learning which subs are no longer workable is the bulk of the institutional knowledge you are paying for. S4L persists it to a JSON file checked into the operator's home directory, not into the LLM's memory.

Stage 2, up close: lock detection that JSON alone cannot see
Any reddit marketing tool written against the JSON API trusts thelockedandarchivedflags returned by the thread endpoint. Most of the time that is fine. Some subreddits configure AutoModerator to lock threads via HTML intervention after a trigger word, comment count, or schedule, and the JSON payload lags behind. The search URL is also not generic. Every query gets a hardcoded quality suffix and a 4,320-hour age filter. A human operator could not practically apply these filters to every thread they see; S4L applies them before the thread enters the queue at all.
Stage 3, up close: the rate-limit choreography
Reddit's API returns two headers on every authenticated read: X-Ratelimit-Remaining and X-Ratelimit-Reset. S4L treats both as persistent state, not as per-request information. A file at /tmp/reddit_ratelimit.json holds the last known quota so the next run does not probe blindly.
Rate-limit dance: preflight, draft, post
The subtle choice here is the preflight. A naive loop would spawn the drafter (an expensive Anthropic API call) first and discover the quota is empty when it tries to post. S4L pays the cost of one extra cheap GET to learn that fact before spending LLM tokens.
Stage 6, the anchor fact: the blocklist writes itself
This is the part no reddit marketing agency publishes. Every experienced operator keeps a mental list of subreddits that bounce you: subs that require prior karma, approved-user-only subs, subs that silently shadow comments from new accounts. Why one Claude session per reply instead of batching?
