AMA principles, measured
The American Marketing Association on Reddit, translated into six measurable rules.
The AMA tells marketers to be authentic on Reddit, provide genuine value, and avoid self-promotion. That framing is correct. It is also too abstract to code against. This page converts each piece of the AMA's 2025 Reddit guidance into a prompt rule that S4L already enforces, using 2,732 tracked Reddit comments as the evidence. Every number on this page came out of scripts/reddit-analysis.md in /Users/matthewdi/social-autoposter.

The American Marketing Association is the oldest and largest trade body for marketers in North America. Its recent guidance on Reddit is sensible and directionally correct. "Authentic," "genuine," "community-first" are the right words. They are also words the LLM writing your Reddit comment cannot act on. So we translated the principles into rules and then measured each rule against a real outbound account.

Six rules, each a card
The bento grid below is the entire Reddit content rule set S4L enforces. Each card is one piece of the AMA's high-level advice, rewritten as a specific numeric claim. The bimodal rule sits at the top because it has the largest single effect size in the data.
The bimodal rule
1 sentence or 4-5 sentences. The 2-3 sentence dead zone averages 1.90 upvotes. Hard-coded at engagement_styles.py:306.
First-person opening
Start with 'I' or 'my'. Measured 37% lift over the 'the' opening. Only 2.8% of 2,732 comments use it.
No product names
Seven projects are blacklisted verbatim on line 309, including s4l itself. The caption gets worse when any is named.
No URLs in comments
103 comments with a URL averaged 1.38 upvotes vs 3.02 for 2,629 that had none. A 54% drop at the first character.
Reply to OP, not commenters
OP replies average 10.82 upvotes. Commenter replies average 2.59. The 4.2x difference dwarfs every other content signal.
Respect the minute
1-5 minute gap between comments: 7.0 avg. Under 1 minute: 2.6 avg. Reddit's anti-spam infrastructure measures both of these.
Statements, not questions
Reddit rewards authoritative contributions. Questions drop average upvotes from 2.98 to 2.64. Statements win.

Rule quality is not evenly distributed across Reddit. The ten subreddits below are where S4L's 2,732 comments earned the highest average upvotes. They share two features: active OP discussions and a high tolerance for first-person experience claims. The AMA principle "tailor content to the subreddit" reduces to "skew time budget toward this list."

Pull candidate threads
scripts/find_threads.py queries Reddit for posts matching the project's config.json keywords, filtered against subreddit_bans.comment_blocked (15 entries) and thread_blocked (26 entries).
Score the thread
pick_thread_target.py ranks candidates by post age, existing comment volume, OP reply-back rate, and subreddit average upvote history. First-of-day in a subreddit is weighted up (avg 3.87 vs 1.98 for 2nd-3rd).
Draft under the six rules
The LLM receives the full rule block from engagement_styles.py lines 296-311. Bimodal length. First-person opening. No product names. No URLs. Statements. Reply to OP if possible.
Post with rate enforcement
post_reddit.py enforces a minimum 3-5 minute gap per run and a 30-50 comment daily cap. The 1-5 minute gap bucket averages 7.0 upvotes, 2.7x the sub-minute bucket.
Log upvotes back into Postgres
scrape_reddit_views.py re-fetches each posted comment on a schedule and writes upvote deltas to reddit_comments. The 2,732 rows on this page came from that table.
Re-derive the rules
project_stats.py aggregates the table weekly. Any rule whose measured lift drops below baseline is re-evaluated. The rule block in engagement_styles.py is the result of that loop, not a prior.
Anchor fact
The bimodal rule has a physical line number.
scripts/engagement_styles.py:306. Open the file and search for "Go BIMODAL". The prompt string is there, unindented, on a single line. It got there because 1-sentence comments (258 rows) averaged 0 upvotes, 2-sentence comments (234 rows) averaged 0, and 4-to-5-sentence comments (1,276 rows) averaged 0. The middle range is a measured trough, not a rhetorical flourish. The rule closes it.

What does the American Marketing Association actually say about Reddit?
The AMA's October 2025 LinkedIn post "Reddit trends in 2025: how marketers can act" and its ama.org resources tell marketers to treat Reddit as a community-first channel: provide genuine value, avoid overt self-promotion, engage authentically, and tailor content to each subreddit. None of the AMA's published Reddit guidance attaches numbers to those instructions, which is where this page adds something new. S4L's 2,732-comment dataset converts each AMA-style directive into a measurable rule with a specific penalty for breaking it. The page does not dispute the AMA's principles. It translates them.
How were the 2,732 comments collected?
The dataset lives in the posts.db and social_autoposter.db SQLite files inside /Users/matthewdi/social-autoposter. scripts/post_reddit.py inserts each comment the bot drafts, scripts/scrape_reddit_views.py re-scans every comment on a recurring schedule to update upvote counts, and scripts/project_stats.py aggregates the table into the rollups on this page. All 2,732 rows are real comments posted by the account Deep_Ad1959 across 45 subreddits between 2025 and 2026-04. The raw rollup is committed to scripts/reddit-analysis.md for inspection.
Why does the first-person opening beat "the" by so much?
The measured numbers are: 77 comments opened with "I" or "my" and averaged 4.18 upvotes. 837 comments opened with "The" and averaged 2.71. 18 comments opened with "You" or "Your" and averaged 4.11. The mechanism is not surprising. Reddit rewards lived-experience claims over prescriptive framing, and a first-person opener signals the former. The operational surprise is that only 2.8% of the 2,732 comments used a first-person opener despite it being the best-performing category. engagement_styles.py line 307 now forces it into every draft.
Is the "American Marketing Association" the same as a "Reddit AMA"?
No. The American Marketing Association is a trade body founded in 1937, headquartered in Chicago, with 70-plus chapter cities. "AMA" on Reddit stands for "Ask Me Anything," which is a Q&A format and, since early 2025, a paid ad unit Reddit calls AMA Ads. The two share an initialism and nothing else. This page is about the overlap between the trade body's marketing advice and Reddit engagement, not the ad unit. Reddit AMAs (the format) and AMA Ads (the product) are separate topics.
If the bimodal rule is real, why does the middle dominate the dataset by volume?
Because the dataset was collected while the rule was being discovered. 1,747 of 2,732 comments are 300-600 characters long, which corresponds to the 4-5 sentence bucket that the rule endorses. Only 194 comments were under 100 characters, and they averaged 6.66 upvotes. The dead zone (100-300 characters) accounted for 502 comments and averaged 2.95. Once the bimodal rule landed in engagement_styles.py line 306, new drafts were pushed toward either pole. The volume skew in the existing dataset is historical: it shows what we were doing before, not what the prompt tells the model to do now.
Does the AMA's advice to "tailor content to the subreddit" have a measurable version?
Yes. The subreddit-specific rollup in scripts/reddit-analysis.md shows extreme variance. The top five subreddits (r/selfimprovement 130.20 avg, r/doordash 74.67, r/cscareerquestions 23.20, r/privacy 22.00, r/KitchenConfidential 12.60) outperform the five worst (r/node -4.00, r/smallbusiness -0.15, r/SoftwareEngineering 0.00, r/reactjs 0.64, r/socialmedia 0.75) by one to two orders of magnitude. S4L's config.json translates this into a hard list: 15 subreddits in comment_blocked, 26 in thread_blocked. The AMA principle "tailor content" becomes "do not post in these 26 subreddits at all."
Can a marketer use these rules without the S4L tool?
Yes. The rules are portable. Six things, applied in a human-typed Reddit comment, will push the draft into the top decile of this dataset. Open with I or my. Keep the comment to 1 sentence or 4-5 sentences. Omit any product name. Omit any URL. Prefer replying to the OP over replying to a commenter. Space comments at least 3-5 minutes apart. The tool exists because doing this at scale requires a prompt and a rate limiter, not because the rules only work inside it. The page is an argument, not a paywall.
Why is S4L itself on the product-name blacklist?
Line 309 of scripts/engagement_styles.py blacklists seven project names: fazm, assrt, pieline, cyrano, terminator, mk0r, and s4l. S4L is the project that owns and runs the bot, yet the same rule applies: the bot will not name S4L inside an organic Reddit comment. The reason is the 1.17 average upvote cap measured whenever any product name appears. Promotion of S4L happens on this website, in long-form guides like this one, and in dedicated threads under r/SideProject. Organic comments stay organic. This is the inverse of the "be visible everywhere" instinct most marketers bring to Reddit.
How often is the rule set re-derived from the data?
Weekly. scripts/project_stats.py runs against the posts.db / social_autoposter.db files and regenerates the rollups that this page cites. If a rule's measured lift drops below baseline for two consecutive weeks, the rule comes up for review. The bimodal rule has held since it was introduced. The first-person opener rule has held. The product-name blacklist has held (and tightened). A few earlier rules, like prefer "curious_probe" style, were removed after the data showed them averaging -0.11 upvotes. The rule set in engagement_styles.py is the current survivor set, not a permanent one.
